How to Restore the Database
If the power goes out while you are using AutoVIP, you could lose data. Or if your hard drive fails. Or some other unexpected emergency strikes. Or you get a new computer. In these scenarios, you will need to restore your AutoVIP database. Fortunately, it is easy to do.
All you need to do is copy your latest AutoVIP backup file back into the AutoVIP installation folder and rename it VIP.TPS.
More detailed steps follow below. By using this process, you are able to recover from the widest range of emergencies.
You can also use this process to transfer your AutoVIP database to a new computer. In that scenario, download AutoVIP from the website at www.alembx.com and install it on your new computer. Then run an AutoVIP backup on the old PC and follow these steps to transfer your data from the old PC to the new one.
TIP: Use the Print button at the top of this window to print a copy of this topic for reference. Then close AutoVIP and follow these steps to restore your database.
You will need to know the name of your last good AutoVIP backup file. Let's assume that file name is VIP.BAK since that is the default name unless you changed it to something else.
1) Open the Windows Explorer (right click the Start button and click Explore) and navigate to the autovip installation directory. The installation directory is called C:\Program Files\Autovip unless you used a different name during installation.
2) Find the file VIP.TPS and right-click on it and select Rename.
3) Windows highlights the VIP.TPS file name so you can type a new name. You could type something like VIP.OLD.
4) Now navigate to the folder where your last good backup is and look for the file VIP.BAK (or whatever else you may have called it when the backup was created.) The default location is simply C:\ unless you used some other location during your last backup.
5) Right click on the file and select Copy.
6) Now go back to the AutoVIP installation directory, right click somewhere in the file list (without selecting a file) and select Paste. (If transferring to a new PC, go to the installation folder on the new PC.)
7) A new file named ' VIP.BAK' appears. Look for it.
8) Right-click on the file named ' VIP.BAK' and select Rename.
9) Rename it to VIP.TPS
You have now restored from the backup file. Plus the backup file you used is still available in the backup location you used. Now you can launch AutoVIP. Depending on how old your backup is, you may need to re-enter some recent maintenance tasks or other data.
AutoVIP and FleetVIP are compatible with Microsoft Windows 7 / Vista / XP operating systems.
